The Mitte and Marktplatz Short Walk

Start at the Marktplatz for a flat 90 minute town walk that covers the essentials without climbing anything. Head east along Bahnhofstrasse past the Raiffeisenbank and Hochroither bakery, turn south at the bridge to the train station, loop back along the Traun river footpath through the Kurpark to the Jodschwefelbad spa buildings, then west back into Mitte past the Pfarrkirche. Total distance 3.5 kilometres, mostly paved, wheelchair-accessible apart from two short gravel stretches in the Kurpark. A good orientation walk on your first morning in town.

For coffee and breakfast stops, Sonnleitner on the Marktplatz opens at 6am (2.80 euros for espresso, 9 euros for a full breakfast plate), Waldbeck bakery on Bahnhofstrasse at 6am (filled Semmel 3.50 to 5 euros), Hochroither for hot Leberkase until 10am (4 euros). Afternoon cake and coffee options are Konditorei Sulzer near the church and the garden tables at Gasthaus Nagl. All are within 400 metres of each other. If you want to eat your way round the town rather than do the full walking loop, that is a legitimate 2 hour option.

The Monday farmers market on the Marktplatz from April to October adds another reason to do this walk. Between 8am and noon you get 15 to 20 stalls selling Salzkammergut cheese, smoked lake whitefish and honey, at prices 20 to 40 percent below the Konsum supermarket. Cash is best. Visit the church next door (free) while you are there. See our neighbourhood guide for a district-by-district picture.

The Lakeside and Untersee Loop

The lakeside loop from Mitte to Untersee and back is 4 kilometres of flat path, 1 hour at an easy pace, and the most scenic short walk from town. From the Marktplatz, follow Lakesidestrasse south-west past the Steeg turnoff and the Goiserer Kellerstub’n, then pick up the lakeside path at the Untersee Bad lido. Walk west along the water to the small marina, turn back along the slightly higher forest path, and loop back through the residential streets of Untersee. Pass the Seehotel Gruner Baum (good lakeside lunch stop at 24 to 38 euros for a main).

For a longer lakeside route, continue past the Untersee marina along the Salzkammergut cycle path (E6 section) towards Steeg. Bad Goisern to Steeg is 3.5 kilometres each way, totalling 7 kilometres round trip, 1 hour 45 minutes at an easy walking pace. You pass a couple of quiet swimming spots, two cafes and the Steeg Bahnhof train station where you can catch a train back if you run out of steam. Fare is 2.90 euros one way.

The most scenic extension is to continue from Steeg around the lake to Obertraun, another 13 kilometres via the east shore. This makes a full 20 kilometre lake loop if you return via the Postbus 542 or the OBB train from Obertraun. Allow 5 to 6 hours for the full loop on foot at walking pace, including rest stops. Alternatively, rent an e-bike in Bad Goisern for 45 euros a day and ride the loop in 2 hours 30 minutes with photo stops. See our lake guide for more route variations.

Uphill Routes: Kalmberg, Lauffen and St. Agatha

The Kalmberg forest trail starts at the Jodschwefelbad spa district (10 minute walk from Mitte) and climbs 450 metres over 2.5 kilometres to the Kalmbergkreuz summit cross. The path is well marked (red and white waymarks), non-technical, and takes 1 hour 15 minutes up and 45 minutes down. Views from the top cover the full Bad Goisern valley and the Dachstein massif to the south. Best in spring and autumn when the valley below is in morning cloud and the summit is above the inversion. Hiking boots or grippy trail shoes, 1 litre of water per person.

The Traunfall gorge walk in Lauffen is 3 kilometres north of Mitte, a 35 minute walk or 4 minute drive to the trailhead. The loop is 3 kilometres, 1 hour round trip, with the 12 metre Traunfall waterfall at its midpoint. Path is gravel with wooden steps through the narrow gorge. Best flow after heavy rain. Free parking at the trailhead, free walk, decent cafe at the gorge exit for coffee and Apfelstrudel. Family-friendly from age 5 up.

The uphill route to St. Agatha is 4 kilometres and climbs 300 metres to the hillside hamlet and the Landhotel Agathawirt restaurant. Tarmac road with minimal traffic, takes 1 hour 15 minutes uphill. The reward is lunch or dinner at Agathawirt (tasting menu 65 to 85 euros, a la carte mains 28 to 42 euros, reservation essential). Walk down after dinner if you time the sunset right. Alternatively, taxi up for 15 to 20 euros and walk down. The plateau views make this one of the best outings from town. For current weather and trail status see ZAMG. See our restaurants guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bad Goisern walkable for visitors?

Central Mitte, Untersee and Jodschwefelbad are easy walking in daylight, with pedestrian paths and minimal traffic. Distances between districts are walkable: Mitte to Untersee is 15 to 20 minutes on a flat path. The wider Salzkammergut requires the Postbus 542 or a rental bike.

What is a good Mitte walking route?

Start at the Marktplatz, head east along Bahnhofstrasse past the Raiffeisenbank, south at the bridge to the train station, back along the Traun river through the Kurpark to Jodschwefelbad, west past the Pfarrkirche to the Marktplatz. 3.5 kilometres total, 1 hour at walking pace, flat.

Can I walk to Steeg?

Yes. Steeg is 3.5 kilometres south of Mitte along the lakeside Salzkammergut cycle path. Flat, well surfaced, 45 minutes at walking pace. You pass two quiet swimming spots and the Steeg Bahnhof train station where you can catch a train back to Mitte for 2.90 euros.

Is the lakeside path safe to walk at night?

The Untersee to Mitte section is lit until 10pm and used by locals on evening walks. Beyond Untersee heading to Steeg, lighting ends and you would need a headtorch. The path itself is paved and safe, the issue is just visibility. Walking back from Untersee to Mitte at 9pm is fine year round.

Can I walk up to St. Agatha?

Yes, and locals recommend it for the view. 4 kilometres uphill via tarmac road with minimal traffic, climbing 300 metres, takes 1 hour 15 minutes. The reward is a meal at Landhotel Agathawirt (tasting menu 65 to 85 euros). Walking down after dinner, if daylight permits, is a highlight.

Are there organised walking tours?

Formal guided walking tours are limited. The Salzkammergut tourism office occasionally runs themed walks in summer (salt mining heritage, spa town history) at 12 to 18 euros per person. Most visitors do self-guided walks using the detailed Kompass map Salzkammergut at 9 euros from local bookshops.

What should I wear for walking?

Comfortable walking shoes or trail runners for town and lakeside. Proper hiking boots for anything uphill (Kalmberg, Agatha, Gosausee). Layered clothing year round because valley weather changes quickly. A light waterproof shell is useful April to October. For winter, waterproof boots with good grip because paths can be icy.

Is it safe to walk at night?

Yes in Bad Goisern itself, which has essentially no street crime. The Marktplatz and Bahnhofstrasse are lit until late. The risk after dark is tripping on uneven cobbles rather than anything human. Stick to lit main streets in the outer hamlets and carry a torch if you are walking between districts.
