On Foot in Mitte and Jodschwefelbad

Things to Do in Bad Goisern: A Local\'s Guide

The best way into Bad Goisern on your first morning is a 90 minute loop from the Marktplatz. Start with an espresso and a Semmel at Sonnleitner Cafe (2.80 euros for coffee, 3.50 for a filled roll), walk east along Bahnhofstrasse to the Pfarrkirche parish church (free entry, 17th century stained glass inside), then north up Schulstrasse past Gasthaus Nagl and the Waldbeck bakery. Cross the main road at the bridge, follow the signed Kalmberg footpath up through the Jodschwefelbad spa district, and loop back down via the Kurpark. Elevation gain 120 metres, nothing technical, great views over the valley at the top.

The Monday farmers market on the Marktplatz runs April through October from 8am to noon, with 15 to 20 stalls selling Salzkammergut cheese, smoked Hallstattersee whitefish, local honey, sourdough bread and wildflower bouquets. Prices are 20 to 40 percent below supermarket equivalents for comparable quality. Austrian locals treat this as a social event as much as a shop. Go before 10am for the best selection. Samples are freely offered. Carry small cash because only two or three stalls have card readers.

For a longer town walk, the Traunfall waterfall trail from Lauffen (3 kilometres north of Mitte, 4 minute drive or 35 minute walk) is a 45 minute loop through a dramatic river gorge with the 12 metre Traunfall waterfall at its midpoint. Best after heavy rain when the flow peaks. Free parking at the Lauffen trailhead, no entry fee. The path is gravel and partly wooden steps, fine for anyone in walking shoes. See our walking tours guide for more routes.

On the Lake: Untersee Lido, Boats and Paddling

The Untersee Bad lido at the south-west edge of Bad Goisern is where locals spend summer afternoons. Entry is 5 euros (3 euros for children 6 to 15, free under 6), open 9am to 7pm from mid-June to early September. You get a grass sunbathing meadow, wooden jetties for deep water swimming, a shallow children’s area, lifeguards, changing rooms and a small kiosk with bratwurst and Stieglbier. A weekly pass is 22 euros. A season pass is 78 euros if you are staying longer. Water temperature peaks at 22 Celsius in late July.

Kayak and SUP rentals operate from the Untersee pier at 15 euros per hour for a SUP or 12 euros for a single kayak. Electric motorboats rent out of the Obertraun pier (7 minute drive) at 30 euros per hour and seat up to four. No licence required for any of these. Wind on the lake picks up from around 2pm most days with the valley foehn, so do longer paddles in the morning. Sunset paddles from 7pm are usually glass calm and spectacular against the Dachstein backdrop. The lake is 8.5 kilometres long and 125 metres deep. Drinking water clean.

For boat trips without self-powering, the Stefanie ferry from Hallstatt Bahnhof to Hallstatt village is the 5-minute classic, 4 euros each way (or included on your OBB train ticket). The Hallstatt lake tour boat runs scheduled 50 minute loops in summer at 14 euros, with commentary in English. From Bad Goisern you get to both by taking the hourly OBB regional train south, one stop to Hallstatt Bahnhof, fare 4.80 euros each way. See our lake guide for seasonal boat details.

Half Day and Full Day Outings

Hallstatt village is the mandatory half-day trip at 12 minutes by car or 25 minutes by Postbus 542 (3.30 euros). Do the Classic View, Beinhaus and salt mine tour in one hit, aim to be on site by 8am to beat the coach arrivals. The Dachstein Ice Cave above Obertraun is the mandatory full-day trip: 25 minute drive plus cable car Section 1 plus 15 minute walk, 44 euros combo ticket, 90 minute cave tour. Add the 5 Fingers platform at the Krippenstein summit for the top-of-the-world photo shot. See our day trips guide for the full list.

For a food-led half day, take the 8 minute train north to Bad Ischl (4.80 euros). Visit the Kaiservilla, the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph (museum tour 19 euros, park 7 euros, open 9am to 5pm), then have Kaiserschmarrn at Zauner Konditorei on Pfarrgasse (16 euros for a full plate that shares between two), and walk the Esplanade along the Traun river before catching the train back. Total cost 35 to 45 euros per person for a deeply Austrian afternoon.

For outdoor activity, the Salzkammergut cycle path around Hallstattersee is 20 kilometres of flat, mostly car-free path. Bike rental in Bad Goisern is 25 euros a day or 45 euros with e-assist. The full loop takes 2 hours 30 minutes at an easy pace with swim and photo stops. Or hike the Gosausee lake loop (50 minute drive to the trailhead, 45 minute flat loop at the lake, iconic Dachstein reflection on clear mornings). The Salzkammergut tourism board has seasonal trail guides with current conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the top things to do in Bad Goisern?

Walk the Mitte loop and Marktplatz, swim at the Untersee Bad lido (5 euros), day-trip Hallstatt by Postbus 542 (3.30 euros each way), visit the Dachstein Ice Cave above Obertraun (44 euros combo), and cycle the lake loop (25 euros bike rental). Three days covers it comfortably.

Is the Pfarrkirche open to visitors?

Yes. The parish church on Kirchenplatz is open daily 8am to 6pm, free entry. Inside are 17th century stained glass windows and a quiet Baroque nave. Outside prayer services, you are free to walk in. Services Sunday at 9am and Wednesday at 7pm in German.

Can I visit the Untersee Bad lido in winter?

No. The lido closes early September and reopens mid-June. In winter the lakefront area is still open to walk on, with the path maintained and lit until 8pm. Swimming the lake below 10 Celsius is not safe without wetsuit experience, so the lido restriction is effectively the season boundary.

What is the Traunfall?

A 12 metre waterfall in the Traun gorge at Lauffen, 3 kilometres north of Mitte. Reached by a 45 minute loop walk from free parking at the Lauffen trailhead. Best flow after heavy rain. Free entry, family-friendly. The gorge is narrow and dramatic with wooden steps through the steepest section.

Is the Monday farmers market worth going to?

Yes. 8am to noon on the Marktplatz from April to October, 15 to 20 stalls selling Salzkammergut cheese, smoked whitefish, honey, sourdough and wildflowers. Prices 20 to 40 percent below the Konsum supermarket for comparable quality. Go before 10am for the best selection.

How many days do I need in Bad Goisern?

Three days for the core: town walk and Untersee swim (day 1), Hallstatt (day 2), Dachstein (day 3). Four to five days if you want to add Gosausee, Bad Ischl with Kaiservilla, and a meal at Agathawirt. A full week works if you include alpine hikes and a day trip to Salzburg.

What is the Kalmberg trail?

A 2.5 kilometre forest path from the Jodschwefelbad spa district up to the Kalmbergkreuz summit cross, climbing 450 metres. Red and white waymarks, non-technical, 1 hour 15 minutes up and 45 minutes down. Valley views over Bad Goisern and the Dachstein massif at the top. Hiking boots recommended.

Are there good museums?

Not in Bad Goisern itself. The nearest serious museums are the Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl (Franz Joseph’s summer residence, 19 euros tour) and the World Heritage Museum in Hallstatt (10 euros, focused on salt mining history). For a small Salzkammergut folk museum experience, the Heimatmuseum in Goisern opens Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.
